Anthony Storr has also studied the importance of childhood solitude dor adult creativity in his recent book Solitude: A Return To The Self. With erudition and insight this psychologist probes the extent biographical facts of the lives of such writers a s Franz Kafka, Anthony Tollope, Beatrix Potter, Edward Lear, Rudyard Kipling, H.H.Munro (Saki) and P.G. Wodehouse. He concludes that
It is legitimate to assume that, in these examples, the development of such highly complex imaginative world was the consequence of being cut off from the emotional fulfillment which children with more ordinary backgrounds experience in their relations with parents and other care takers…
However, what began as compensation of deprivation bacame a rewarding way of life…as valid as any other and more interesting than most. Even if their intimate attachments were not the hub around which their lives revoloved, there is no reason to suppose that these lives were unfulfilled.
